How Long Is Halftime at the FIFA World Cup?

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 moves into the knockout stage, every minute of every match matters. With teams now facing win-or-go-home pressure, fans are paying close attention to every moment — including halftime.

At the FIFA World Cup, halftime lasts 15 minutes. This is the standard break used in most major football competitions around the world, giving players time to rest, recover, receive instructions from coaches, and prepare for the second half.

For fans watching from home or attending matches in person, halftime is also a chance to grab food, check match updates, discuss the first half, and get ready for the final 45 minutes.

The 15-minute break is similar to many other major sports and leagues, including Major League Soccer, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, and the NBA. It is shorter than NFL halftime, which is usually longer and can become much longer during the Super Bowl because of the halftime show.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 final is also expected to bring something new: a major halftime show. FIFA announced that the tournament final will include the first-ever World Cup final halftime show, combining football, music, and global entertainment.

Artists including Shakira, Madonna, and BTS are expected to headline the historic performance. Shakira’s involvement is especially meaningful because of her long connection to the World Cup, including her famous role in past tournament music and performances.

For many fans, the halftime show will add another layer of excitement to the final. But for the matches leading up to that moment, halftime remains simple and familiar: 15 minutes to reset before the action continues.

As the knockout stage begins, those 15 minutes could become even more important. Coaches may use halftime to change tactics, players may use it to recover, and fans may use it to prepare for the drama of the second half.
